Bellarine Bears make promising start to season

Mark Lazarus

Bears A-Grade notched up win number 3 for the season with a solid win over Guild 9-2. Timely batting by a number of players including Wayne Visser and Lewis Weldon allowed us to score 7 runs in the 2nd inning. Pat Brackley had a good day with the bat and pitched 5 innings keeping Guild quiet. Brock Wells and Wayne Visser were solid in defense and Brock closed out the last inning.

A-Reserve played at home for their first game of the season, losing to Guild 3-0. Matt Sage was outstanding on the hill and our young guys, Sam Lazarus and Jye Robinson were fantastic in the field. Geoff Rome went deep with a massive shot for a double.

B-Reserve played away and had a great 8-5 win against Guild. Chris Dunn pitched the entire game and had great support from all of his fielders. Matt Connell had a great game with the bat (3 hits) and was also involved in double plays with Dan Vella. Chris Campbell took some great catches in center field.

C-Grade Blue (Women’s team) had a tough start to the season with a few key players away losing 30-0 to Lara. Christina Cameron started on the hill and threw 92 pitches. 2 new players for Bears Blue, Chantelle Baker at Short Stop and Sam Gillard both making contributions. Laura Hudson was as reliable as ever behind the plate.

C-Grade Red travelled to Ballarat but finished down 17-9. 2 juniors, Isaac O’Brien and Cole Malcolm getting their first senior start. Isaac and Paul Cameron pitched for the Bears, but Ballarat were in form with the bat. The Bears fielding was solid and batting was aggressive, showing promising signs for the season.
