Bellarine Bears lose a close one to Deakin but retain top spot

Not a great weekend for the Bears with all 5 senior teams finishing down.

A-Grade missed an opportunity to go a game clear on the ladder, but lost to Deakin 7-5 at Wallington Reserve in a close 9 inning game. With scores tied at 5 each in the 9th, Deakin scored 2. The Bears loaded the bases, but were unable to capitilise.

A-Reserve played at home, losing to Deakin 2-9. Matt Sage had trouble early, with Deakin scoring 8. Brad Hockey relieved and was outstanding, giving up just the 1 run. Great fielding contributions from Matt Taylor, Sam Lazarus and Mick Alldis who played his first game with Bears.


B-Reserve played at Colac and again sprinted out of the gate with 4 runs in the first. Finn Ferguson-Cumming pitching for the first time and some good outfield work kept things in check. Isaac O’Brien relieved and Colac took advantage of some walks to plate 5 runs in the 2nd and 7 in the 3rd. Zach Purcell completed the pitching duties. 3 new players for the team in Andy Riddett, Trace Bourke and Brandon Barnett contributed 6 RBI’s, but Colac went on to win 12-7.


C-Grade Blue lost 16-2 against NW Titans. Heather Nicol debuted on the mound and pitched 2 good inning’s with good fielding in support. Chantelle Baker played well at Short Stop and Steph Stott did a great job with the bat. The ladies are at home this Saturday at 12:00pm.


C-Grade Red were at home on Sunday against Deakin with Mitch Rice, Vincent Clemenson and Darby Ferguson-Cumming all having their first game. Paul Cameron pitched 5 inning‘s with Steve Osbourne relieving in the last. Good hitting from Paul Cameron, Marc Weakley, Pete Hockey, Shane Cumming and Herb Goonan wasn’t enough with Deakin winning 10-5.
